Fine Art Piece For Upcoming Zine - Virgin Territory by Steven Galekovic

This is an abstract, fine art piece I created using a combination of color pencils, pen and ink line work and hand written notes. This piece is apart of my new zine titled "Virgin Territory."

You don't have to prove anything about your life to anyone other than yourself. People that judge you are insecure and don't matter when it comes down to it. Move on and away from negativity and follow your personal goals and dreams.

New Illustration/Graphic Work For T-Shirt Design by Steven Galekovic

I recently got hired for a project, to create a graphic illustration based off of the famous Obama "HOPE" poster for a t-shirt design. My client wanted her dog, Pepper, to be the main focus and have a red, white (light tan) and blue themed look, similar to how Obama was portrayed.

Pepper is running for President - I suggest you vote for this dog if you know whats good for you!!!

More photos of this graphic on t-shirts coming soon in the near future!!!

New DIY Board Graphic I Designed & Illustrated by Steven Galekovic

I created an illustration of a Blowfish, which was intended to be used as a graphic to be put on a skateboard. Here is the final execution of the Blowfish graphic silkscreened onto a deck. This was all done DIY.

It is definitely so gratifying and so much goddamn fun creating your own graphics and being able to ride them too!! It's something that I always wanted to do since I was a very little skate rat!!

Time to set this thing up!!!!!!!

Throwback - Optical Illusion Scroll Painting by Steven Galekovic

Last Summer I took basically 3 months to focus all my time and effort to creating an extremely long optical illusion. I LOVE op art - This was so much fun to do, I cannot explain!! This was the longest, ongoing experience I had in order to create just one painting. The thing kept going - it just kept unrolling! I actually was in the middle of packing up for moving across country at the time, and I had to stop painting (against my will,) to help pack. I ended up estimating the scroll painting at being 20 feet long! I still have a lot to go on it though. Unfortunately, I have no room to unravel it in my new home. Hopefully some day soon I can finally finish this thing! Here's a few photos I shot during my painting process...

This was moving time - I believe I didn't stop painting on this thing up until the last week before moving!

Griptape Art - Vital Component In Getting Psyched To Go Skate by Steven Galekovic

The absolute, best part about skateboarding, (other than riding the piece of wood, and going fast, and bombing hills, and slappying red curbs, and ollie-ing super high over everything,) is constructing the board. More importantly, customizing the sheeit out of it!

For the past bunch of boards I've ridden throughout this year and last, I have put time into creating different designs onto the top of each board, i.e. on the griptape.

Griptape - one of the most vital parts of a skateboard. It keeps your feet stable in serious times, such as while you get speed wobbles skating down a mountain pass and allows you to perform the necessities, such as a simple ollie over a dead possum in the road. The griptape is not only a vital part of a skateboard, it is the one thing skaters unwillingly look down at maybe 300 times during a single skate session. Setting up your feet in order to try whatever flip trick hours upon end is something that is very, very common for anyone. The majority of the average skate kids tend to settle with taking hardly any time to think thoroughly about how they would like to make their board look visually pleasing. Instead, many kids go the unoriginal route and end up buy/set up their boards with boring, all black sheets of grip. I myself have always thought it was kind of stupid. Why do exactly what everybody else does? Life is more fun, especially in skateboarding, when it is lived through the unconventional, different way of the people surrounding you.

When I want to look down at my griptape, I want to get fuckin psyched to go skate hard, & not think about anything other than whatever ledge I want to frontside grind onto next. For me, that means at least adding some kind of interesting, eye popping, bold, colorful, crazed design all over my grip to get me hyped up. So thats exactly what I have at least been trying to do.

Placement is key

Placement is key

First off, I try to get a mixture of clear and black griptape. I use an exact-o-blade and cut various pieces of each grip, making all different types of shapes and sizes to mix and match & stick on the board. I then choose to either spray paint specific pieces of the grip (mainly the solid black,) or spray portions of the top of the board, in order to stick the other pieces of clear grip over.

At the same time, I try to look for interesting pictures or make specific graphics/drawings to stick on top of the board as well. It's fun to look down at your board and see a sick image on the grip. For example, on two of my past boards I made a collage graphic consisting of a pen and ink abstract design and a found photo of Scarlett Johansson with her tit hanging out ;) !

Once I've stuck all the grip on the board, I then start to paint over portions of it. I've been using big, multi colored paint pens to design wavy, intricate lines, as well as any other painting technique I feel like doing during the moment of constructing the board. I try to use vibrant, bright colors - anything that catches my eyes and gets me feeling energetic and excited.

Thats pretty much it!

The important part about customizing griptape is having fun! Don't take yourself too serious and create something that you truly would love to look down at while you skate. Go crazy with it! Who cares - its skateboarding and nobody tells you how to ride your board, let alone what to put on your griptape!
